ROYO reimagines early literacy for multilingual learners through evidence-based, expressive reading practice

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, April 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- ROYO (Read On Your Own), the personalized literacy platform putting students at the center of their own reading stories, today announced the launch of multilingual and English Language Learner (ELL) capabilities, making it one of the first Science of Reading-aligned platform to bridge structured phonics instruction with four-domain language practice and culturally and linguistically sustaining, expression-led content for multilingual students.

The announcement comes as more than 32 states have mandated Science of Reading adoption, yet a gap remains in how schools serve multilingual learners. Existing decodable resources were not built for students learning to read in a language they're simultaneously acquiring. ROYO's new ELL capabilities are, delivering phonological awareness, decoding, and fluency instruction alongside vocabulary, comprehension, and four-domain language practice, which are all tied to stories where students see themselves as the main character.

"Multilingual learners in K-5 deserve the same time and effort we give them in middle and high school. When we assume that being immersed in a classroom counts as English Language Development, we are doing a huge disservice to students in their prime years of language acquisition," said Yasmin Barkett, Founder & CEO of ROYO. “As a simultaneous bilingualist, I understand how critical that window is. ROYO bridges the Science of Reading with designated language development so ML students get what they deserve, even when their teacher doesn't speak their language."

ROYO keeps teacher instruction at the center. Teachers customize phonics instruction, set sight word lists, and access real-time analytics on fluency, accuracy, and progress. Since launching, ROYO has served more than 17,000 students, supported 3,970+ teachers, and generated over 150,900 personalized decodable books, with teachers reporting five or more hours saved per week on prep and tracking.

“Language is the architecture for thinking. If multilingual learners are only taught to decode, without meaning and context, they can read the words but not understand them,” notes Katherine Nelson, Language and Literacy Specialist. “Integrating language development is what makes literacy instruction truly effective, and that’s where ROYO is making a difference.”

ROYO's multilingual and ELL features are available now for K-5 classrooms, literacy intervention programs, and at-home use. Schools and districts interested in spring pilots can contact ROYO at: hello@royo.ai
