Senior In Home Care: How Seniors Can Protect Their Skin

Summer is just around the corner and that means a lot of seniors are already preparing to spend more time outside.

FORT MYERS, FL, UNTIED STATES, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — ++

Summer is just around the corner and that means a lot of seniors are already preparing to spend more time outside. Needless to say, that’s definitely a good thing, however, there are some risks involved as well. If you have a senior family member in Fort Myers, FL you’re probably fully aware of how hot summers are in this region. In order to make sure that your loved one can safely enjoy the sun, senior in-home care experts recommend the following tips:

Proper Cleansing

Everyone sweats more in the summer and elders are no exception. As a result, it is important to make sure that seniors use mild skin cleansers to help out with this problem. There are many different types of cleansers available so take good care to pick one that’s right for your elders, particularly if they suffer from a skin condition.

Sunscreen is a Must

According to senior in-home care specialists, seniors should use sunscreen on a daily basis during the summer months. That’s good advice for everyone but it’s especially important for the elderly. Older skin has a much tougher time recovering from prolonged sun exposure so make sure your loved ones don’t go outside without sunscreen.

Keep Hydrated

Once the heat waves start rolling in, it’s going to be more important than ever to drink plenty of water. As a general rule of thumb, senior in-home care professionals recommend drinking between 6-8 glasses of water per day in order to stay properly hydrated.

Avoid Going Outside during Peak Hours

Sun radiation is most dangerous between 10 AM and 4 PM so make sure your seniors stay inside during those times. Doing so will significantly reduce the risk of developing harmful skin conditions. Instead, spending time outside in the morning and evening is the best way to enjoy the hot summer sun.

Adhere to these tips and your senior loved one is going to have no skin issues this summer!

Winning Entries Announced in Smithsonian–Cricket Media’s 8th Annual Spark!Lab Dr. InBae Yoon Invent It Challenge

2019 Spark!Lab Dr. InBae Yoon Invent It Challenge

More than 564 Students, through individual and team entries, submitted pioneering inventions to help improve and enhance the lives of older adults.

This group of winners, the honorable mentions, and all the submittals reflect Dr. Yoon’s legacy and vision, including his idea that ‘invention is a state of mind.”

— Sharon Klotz, Head of Invention Education, Lemelson Center

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Aging affects people’s ability to stay socially engaged, mentally and physically active, and complete everyday tasks, but if the highly original concepts and inventions proposed by students around the globe as part of the 8th Annual Spark!Lab Dr. InBae Yoon Invent It Challenge are any indicator, help is on its way. Cricket Media, in partnership with the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s challenge, which received more than 250 entries from across U.S., South America, Asia, and Europe.

The challenge asked students ages 5–18 to think about a real-world way to help older adults and to devise new, ground-breaking inventions to achieve these goals. For their entries, students were required to follow a seven-step invention process, including identifying a problem, conducting research, sketching their ideas, building a prototype, testing the product, refining it, and marketing it to potential users. The eight winners—four individuals and four teams—and 20 honorable mentions were evaluated by a panel of judges from the Smithsonian, AARP, and Cricket Media.

“[Older adults] love to garden … gardening is good for relaxing, exercising, combating loneliness, and spending time with the family or the community,” say 15-year-old Delaney and Makenzie, inventors of the “Pop Up Planter.” This hydraulic-powered garden bed helps those with limited mobility improve physical, social, and mental health. Addressing the issue of decreased food consumption due to age or medical conditions such as strokes, 11-year-old Ravindu’s Temp Plate is meant to help older adults – who tend to eat more slowly than others – with a means to keep their food warm. Virtual Me, created by 10-year-old Kavi, is an innovative robotic technology that integrates artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality technology to help older people who live apart from family members to get the emotional support and personal connection they need.

The winners of the team 5–7 age category built Pop Out Stairs, a multipurpose cane that contains a set of foldable stairs, to enable older adults to “feel safe when reaching things up high.” Sophia, winner of the individual 14–21 age category, invented The Helping Hand, a device that helps older adults with arthritis maintain proper oral hygiene. People can slip their hand into a glove that is fitted with various tools for brushing, cleaning, and flossing their teeth, eliminating the need to grip toothbrushes or small pieces of floss.

This year, the two amazing inventions that won the ePals Choice Award, with both receiving tens of thousands of online votes, are the “FIG” created by a team of 11- to 13-year-olds and “The Craw” created by a team of 8-10-year-olds. The “FIG” provides older adults with an easy way to garden indoors and “The Craw” assists older adults in picking up objects off the ground while also serving as a safety light.

“These young inventors have taken the time to research and understand the complexities of aging and have devised brilliant inventions to assist and empower the aging population,” says Laura Woodside, Vice President of Education Products at Cricket Media. “We are proud to showcase their inventions on our global platform. Their work is evidence of their innovative thinking, impressive creativity and their admirable desire to improve the quality life for all.”

“The winning entries reflected not only innovative ideas but also the inventive process.” says Sharon Klotz, Head of Invention Education for the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. “In fact, the process skills – iterative design, collaboration, prototyping, tweaking based on feedback – are lifelong skills applicable in any context. This group of winners, the honorable mentions, and all the submittals reflect Dr. Yoon’s legacy and vision, including his idea that ‘invention is a state of mind.’

Complete List of Individual Winners, by Age:
• Ages 5–7: The Tomato Picker– Brendan D. (Virginia)
• Ages 8–10: Virtual Me – Kavi S. (California)
• Ages 11–13: Temp Plate – Ravindu K. (Connecticut)
• Ages 14+: The Helping Hand – Sophia I. (Missouri)
Complete List of Team Winners, by Age:
• Team Ages 5–7: The Pop Out Stairs (New York)
• Team Ages 8–10: The Craw (New York)

New Study Finds Main Ingredient in Roundup® Linked to Liver Disease

Schmidt National Law Group

First-of-its-kind study finds association between glyphosate and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in humans

There have been a handful of studies … where animals either were or weren’t fed Roundup or glyphosate directly, and they all point to the same thing: the development of liver pathology.”

— Dr. Paul J. Mills

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., USA, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — In a first-of-its kind study out of the University of California, San Diego, researchers find glyphosate—the main ingredient in the popular weedkiller Roundup—is associated with fatty liver disease in humans. Past research has shown the powerful chemical is linked to liver disease in animal studies, but this study is the first to find a link in humans.

The study, published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology in April 2019, was conducted by researchers in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at UCSD’s School of Medicine. The team examined glyphosate in the urine samples of two different groups of patients, those with a diagnosis of a certain type of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and those without. Their results were significant, says an article published by UCSD, and showed that regardless of a patient’s age, race, ethnicity, body mass index, or diabetes status, glyphosate residue was significantly higher in those with fatty liver disease than those with healthier livers.

Lead researcher Dr. Paul J. Mills, professor and chief in the Department of Family Medicine, says this study coupled with previous animal studies suggest a link between the use of commercial glyphosate in our food supply and the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, according to the article.

Roundup has been used by farmers around the world to kill weeds without harming their crops, which are genetically modified to withstand the effects of glyphosate. Roundup has been used by home gardeners since the 1970s, but its use grew significantly in the late 1990s after Roundup Ready seeds were introduced to the market.

Since 1996, America’s farmers have been spraying their fields with glyphosate and its use has been steadily increasing. The prevalence of fatty liver disease has also been on the rise in the last two decades, says Mills.

“There have been a handful of studies, all of which we cited in our paper, where animals either were or weren’t fed Roundup or glyphosate directly, and they all point to the same thing: the development of liver pathology,” Mills told UCSD. “So I naturally thought: ‘Well, could it be exposure to this same herbicide that is driving liver disease in the U.S.?’”

Mills is now reportedly planning to study patients eating an all-organic diet to see how an herbicide-free diet impacts biomarkers of liver disease.

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the United States, and studies have found it lingering in our food supply even after the crops have been harvested and processed. Glyphosate has been found in beloved breakfast cereals like Cheerios, as well as in our water supplies.

In addition to liver disease, Roundup has also been linked to certain cancers, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. There are now thousands of lawsuits pending in courts across the US accusing Roundup manufacturer Monsanto and its new parent company Bayer of failing to warn about the risks of glyphosate. Several of those lawsuits have already gone to trial, with juries handing down multi-million and billion-dollar verdicts against Bayer and Monsanto.

We’ve helped 1,800 Roundup claimants and counting in their fight against Bayer and Monsanto, including co-counsel relations with leading law firms. Contact us today to learn how Schmidt National Law Group can help you.

Pathways Bioscience Announces Peer-Reviewed Publication of Work Utilizing Nrf2-Activation Effects of PB123

Supplementing HIV-1 transgenic rats with Pathways Nrf2 activator PB123 restored Nrf2 functionality

AURORA, CO, USA, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Pathways Bioscience LLC, a biomedical sciences company focused on discovering and developing small molecule drugs and dietary supplements that act on gene transcription pathways, and the provider of the Nrf2 activating dietary supplements PB123 and PB125® announces the recent peer-reviewed publication of a scientific paper entitled “MiR-144 Mediates Nrf2 Inhibition and Alveolar Epithelial Dysfunction in HIV-1 Transgenic Rats” in the American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology.

“This publication describes a collaborative study carried out in Dr. David Guidot’s laboratory at Emory University. HIV infection can still increase lung vulnerability, even in individuals on anti-retroviral therapy, by a mechanism that impairs the Nrf2 pathway. Supplementing HIV-1 transgenic rats with the Pathways Bioscience Nrf2 activator PB123 restored Nrf2 functionality, antioxidant enzyme expression and lung epithelial barrier function,” noted Dr. Joe McCord, the scientific leader and co-founder of Pathways Bioscience.

“The discovery of drug and dietary means to activate Nrf2 has grown in interest around the world do to anticipated benefits for health, wellness, and aging,” said Dr. Brooks Hybertson, President/CEO and co-founder of Pathways Bioscience. “Nrf2 functionality can get inhibited by a variety of factors related to aging and illness,” he continued, “so we are interested in new ways to support the Nrf2 pathway. We developed our PB123 dietary supplement based on how well its ingredients worked together to activate the Nrf2 transcription factor. We were honored to have an opportunity to contribute to this new publication by Drs. Fan, Kukoyi, and Staitieh in Dr. David Guidot’s laboratory.”

Notably, this publication describes two approaches. Both treatment with an antagomir that silences miR-144 and dietary supplementation with PB123 restored the Nrf2 pathway and barrier functionality of alveolar epithelial cells from HIV-1 transgenic rats. The Nrf2 transcription factor has been called the “master regulator” of cellular antioxidant, detoxification, and cell defense gene expression. This newly published work helps scientists get a better understanding of potential Nrf2-inhibitory effects of miR-144, and how this be overcome with targeted inhibitors of miR-144 or with Nrf2-activating dietary supplements, with the goal of developing new approaches to supporting lung health.

News about Dr Leonard Joseph Marchinski

A medical condition of the shoulder or arm severely affects one’s daily activities. The new article by surgeon Leonard Marchinski, MD, explains treatments.

LEONARD JOSEPH MARCHINSKI, M.D. (N/A:N/A)

Elbow surgeries are one of the most crucial ways for treating pain, swelling, tearing, fracture, or dislocation of the muscles, tendons, tissues, and bones that form the elbow joint.”

— Dr. Leonard J. Marchinski, Pennsylvania, orthopedic surgery

WYOMISSING, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The upper limbs or arms and hands are critical for performing almost every activity of daily life. Any disease or injury that affects a shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist or hand also has a significant impact on a person’s quality of life. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Leonard J. Marchinski explains this subject in a new article. The complete article will be available on Dr. Marchinski’s blog at https://leonardmarchinskimd.wordpress.com/

While upper extremity orthopedics refers to any process that is undertaken to treat a problem in the bones, joints, muscles, tissues, nerves, ligaments, and tendons of the hand and upper extremity area, this article focuses on elbow surgeries.

Structure of the Elbow Joint

Elbow is a hinge joint that connects the upper arm to the forearm via humerus and the radius and ulna, respectively. The joint is held together by the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) from the outside and the medial collateral ligament (MCL) from the inside. The joint is also surrounded by a set of muscles that facilitate its movements. The muscles are attached to the bones via tendons and protected by the cartilage covers at the ends. For further protection and lubrication of the joint, bursa sacs are present.

Elbow Surgeries

Just like all other areas of medicine, surgeries make one category of treatment procedures for conditions that affect the structure and/or functioning of the elbows. The elbow joint can get affected due to a variety of reasons, such as injuries, diseases, trauma, aging, and overuse.
Common diseases and elbow conditions that may require surgery for treatment include:
* Arthritis
* Elbow stiffness
* Bone spur
* Fractures
* Dislocations
* Ulnar and radial nerve entrapment
* Elbow instability
* Tennis elbow
* Golf elbow
* Nerve palsy, i.e. the loss of flexion and extension of the elbow
* Radial tunnel syndrome
* Cubital tunnel syndrome
* Osteochondritis dissecans
* Olecranon bursitis
* Repetitive motion disorders

In most cases, surgery is the last choice of treatment and is only suggested or opted for when other measures, such as treatment, injection, splints, and physiotherapies, fail to provide relief.

Methods of Elbow Surgeries

Elbow surgeries can be performed in the following two ways:

1. Open Surgery
The surgical procedures performed in traditional ways i.e. by making incisions on or around the affected area are called open surgeries.
2. Arthroscopic Surgery
Also called keyhole or minimally invasive surgeries, they are performed by using an endoscope. These types of surgeries have been increasingly preferred because of minimal incisions and shorter recovery periods.

Types of Elbow Surgeries

Here are some of the most widely performed elbow surgeries:
* Ulnar Nerve Decompression/Transposition
As evident from the name, this surgical procedure is performed to relive pressure, and when necessary, reposition the ulnar nerve, which is responsible for providing muscles nerve supply and sensation to the forearm and the hand. Several factors can cause the ulnar nerve to get pressured and compressed and causes pain, numbness, and/or irritation in the elbow.

Some conditions that may increase the risk of ulnar nerve compression are cubital tunnel syndrome, fracture of the medial epicondyle – the area where the nerve is naturally located, rheumatoid arthritis, or even due to leaning of the elbow on a hard surface for a prolonged period of time.

During the ulnar nerve transposition surgery, the nerve is relocated from behind the medial epicondyle (its natural position) to the front of the elbow, so it no longer gets compressed or pinched.

* ORIF
ORIF stands for Open Reduction and Internal Fixation. It is a type of elbow surgery that is performed to treat elbow fractures in cases where:
* The broken bone pierces through the skin
* The bone has broken into several pieces
* The broken pieces are significantly dislocated or out of alignment

These conditions usually occur when a person falls on an outstretched hand, but certain diseases, like osteoporosis, also increase the risk. The procedure involves repositioning the bones and fixing them in place with plates, screws, nail, or wires; whatever the surgeon deems necessary. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia.

The Bottom Line

Elbow surgeries are one of the most crucial ways for treating pain, swelling, tearing, fracture, or dislocation of the muscles, tendons, tissues, and bones that form the elbow joint. Hence, they make a crucial category of the upper extremity orthopedics.

* Wrist Arthroscopy and treatment of Wrist Instability
* Reconstruction of the Base of the Thumb Joint
* Tendon and Ligament Repair, Reconstruction, Transfers
* Shoulder Replacement
* Operative and Non-Operative Fracture Care

PRECAMBRIAN: A Time Traveling Adventure in Music by Sverre Knut Johansen with Robert Rich

Sverre Knut Johansen in his workshop

Sverre Knut Johansen of Norway has created a musical journey back through time with PRECAMBRIAN on Spotted Peccary Music.

Dreamers and Warriors photo by Martin Stranka

Album cover photograph, Dreamers and Warriors, was created by international award-winning photographer Martin Stranka

Robert Rich

San Francisco-based ambient music, dark-ambient, tribal, and trance music artist Robert Rich collaborated on Precambrian.

New Spotted Peccary Release PRECAMBRIAN by Sverre Knut Johansen offers atmospheric aural escape, collectible physical product, and audiophile-worthy recording.

The music is epoch-based where I try to convey with nature sounds what might have happened on Earth, creating moods around certain events that have taken place, like oxygen, birds, water, and ice.”

— Sverre Knut Johansen

PORTLAND, OREGON, USA, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The story of life on Earth is an ambitious undertaking. Focusing his conceptual musical lens on the prehistoric development of planet Earth and its inhabitants, Sverre Knut Johansen is joined by noted electronic music maestro and soundscape pioneer Robert Rich to create a deeply compelling ambient-electronic odyssey that serves as a virtual soundseeing tour through our planet's vivid history. PRECAMBRIAN, the album, releases on the Spotted Peccary Music label this Friday, May 24, 2019.

PRECAMBRIAN takes the listener through significant geological periods and evolutionary events of Earth's 4.6 billion year history, bringing the epochs and eons to life through musical poetry and recorded natural sounds. The sonic landscapes, both organic and electronic, are always deep and captivating, evolving through abstract amorphous spaces, peaceful harmonious moods, and dramatic eventful moments. One almost wishes it were required curriculum in every 8th Grade Science classroom, for enhancing studying as much as learning evolution and geology.

Sverre Knut Johansen, with Robert Rich, has created a sonic masterpiece that goes from the dim beginnings of gas and dust particles through the formation of the planets, the beginnings of microbes and simple algae creating the air we now breathe, all the way to our current Anthropocene epoch. The music is built on a foundation of swirling synths, pulsing electronics, and occasional rhythmic moments, creating a space where Johansen’s mesmerizing compositions are highlighted by Robert Rich’s piano, with added guitar textures by David Helpling. Add to that the recordings of environmental sounds, both natural and mechanical, and the immersive world of PRECAMBRIAN springs to life with depth, energy, and artistic vitality.

"A meditation on the story of life on Earth is an ambitious undertaking. Perhaps only the language of synthesizers is complex enough to handle it all," writes music critic Robin B. James. "The natural sounds of trickling water and a few supersonic aircraft in the distance are realistically expressed, everything else is purely electronic. This is music for thinking about creation, certainly not a narrative explaining the Big Bang Theory. What you will hear is a meditation."

Album packaging and design stands out on this release, from its 3-fold geological timescale and 20-page booklet to the award-winning photography. PRECAMBRIAN’s cover art, Dreamers and Warriors, was created by international award-winning photographer Martin Stranka, a Czech photographer who won first place with the image at the 2019 prestigious Sony World Photography Awards, chosen from 326,000 photographs from 196 countries. “The epochs on Earth are an exciting topic for me," Johansen professes, "so I was inspired to create an album around the concept of the Earth's geological time scale. The music is epoch-based where I try to convey with nature sounds what might have happened on Earth, creating moods around certain events that have taken place, like oxygen, birds, water, and ice.” Deep listeners may notice some of the real world ambiance skillfully woven into the tracks throughout the album.

Johansen and Rich transport the listener through the ages as they conjure sonic visions of a planet in constant change. The music evolves in a vivid timelapse that unfolds before the ears, occasionally pausing to experience key events along the way, before the title track ends the album with a sweeping musical epilogue that acts as the closing credits to Johansen’s epic geologic adventure.

About Sverre Knut Johansen:
Sverre Knut Johansen is an electronic music composer from Mo i Rana, Norway. His first album Distant Shore was released in 1994 and was produced by Erik Wøllo on the Norwegian label Origo Sound. In 1999, Johansen released The Source of Energy, followed by Planets in 2012. Johansen’s releases Nightshift and Elements of Light were inspired by the work of Steve Roach. Johansen’s previous releases on Spotted Peccary Music include The Vast Expanse, Secret Space Program, and Earth From Above.

About Robert Rich:
Robert Rich has helped define the genres of ambient music, dark-ambient, tribal, and trance, so of course his music remains hard to categorize. Part of his unique sound comes from using home-made acoustic and electronic instruments, microtonal harmonies, computer-based signal processing, chaotic systems and feedback networks. Rich began building his own analog synthesizers in 1976, when he was 13 years old, and later studied for a year at Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). He released his first album Sunyata in 1982, and across four decades he has released over 40 albums. Rich has performed in caves, cathedrals, planetaria, art galleries and concert halls throughout Europe and North America. His all-night Sleep Concerts, first performed in 1982, became legendary in the San Francisco area. Rich’s solo albums available on Spotted Peccary Music include Tactile Ground, Vestiges, What We Left Behind, Filaments, Nest, The Biode, Ylang, Medicine Box and Echo of Small Things.
